Feedly post 2

There were many more posts in my news feed today than yesterday. I also noticed today that I could choose different layouts for the articles to be in. Again, I’m looking for posts that interest me, and most seem to contribute to the daily news day-sports, politics, etc. However I found a strange story on the BBC homepage called “YouTube aids flat earth conspiracy theorists, research suggests”. Some news, such as this, can be considered a lot less important than other articles. Since I gave no specifications of what type of news I’m interested in, any type of news, regardless of how important it may be in my eyes, show up in my feed. Not to say that the news that I deem less important to me is also less interesting.  However, I tend not to fully read those types of stories most of the time. It just seems odd sometimes to see an article for the upcoming super-moon placed right under an article about a terrible shooting. Since I normally receive my news from the associated press twitter (as of recently for another class) and the recommended four articles provided by my phone, I think I’m just not used to such a wide range of news choices and topics to read about. There was an unspoken thought in my mind that if something was so important, than I would hear about it somehow-either by a recommended article or word of mouth. Having a range of articles can not only provide more detail (in certain cases), but can expand my viewpoints.

I wouldn’t necessarily refer to the Feedly website as “expanding my viewpoints” in news, at least not yet. I think I might just have to get used to the formats, or not be confused when some article links just lead to YouTube videos, but right now I don’t think I would use feedly for daily news updates.

Feedly post 1

I followed five different news sites in feedly: the associated press, the daily press, cnn, abc, bbc, and npr. Besides what was required, I wanted to follow news sources that I have already heard of and know are popular and fairly unbiased. When I looked at my news feed for the first time, I noticed that it was sorted on “most popular” and “today” instead of by the source of news. Besides saying which news source each particular story was from, it also says when the source was uploaded-some being as early as just three minutes before. Many of the stories were posted incredibly recently (today). There is no real sorting to the news provided (politics, sports, etc.). One story is describing a college basketball player, while another is about the politics about Saudi Arabia, and another about the upcoming Oscars. When I clicked on an article, it had multiple “tags” referring to what the story was about (to make it easier to find in search) and an image/video, as well as a link to the website the story is from. After the story is read, the title becomes grey instead of black to indicate as such. However, some clicks lead to full stories, while others just lead to videos or a short description on the website. I’ve been clicking stories that interest me more, but it took a little while to find a full story. The journalism I read today seems less opinionated and more professional.

In-class assignment

How do authors define celebrity?

Celebrity is a practice and does not refer to a person. It refers to being well known across the “spectrum of fame”. To be well known as a celebrity or a micro-celebrity, one must have influence on the internet. Some websites, such as Twitter, have already famous people on them to make themselves more well-known. However, other websites such as YouTube generally have the public publishing videos, making them micro-celebrity.

What is the main premise/argument?

Websites such as Twitter can study celebrity practice through the interactions of the famous people/fans, and can show the difference between celebrity and micro-celebrity. Due to social media, there are now different brands of fame as people make themselves well-known across the internet. Already famous individuals can show the “real them” with fans by answering their tweets or even having conversations with a separate individual on Twitter. Even though they are still promoting themselves and what they do, they also want to look like the “common man” to relate their fans.

How can you relate this to your digital activity?

I don’t have an Instagram or post a lot about myself in general, because I would prefer the only people who know me to be those I’ve met in person. I do follow some famous people on Twitter that I like that are the general kind of celebrity, but I also follow some who practice micro-celebrity (YouTube stars, etc.)
