This article discusses the popularization of the feminism movement in recent years and how that effects the ideology. As it is so popular, it can become corporate-with celebrity endorsements, clothing lines, and countless blogs dedicated to it. It argues that popular feminism is much different than what feminism historically is, and doesn’t really “acknowledge intersectionality” and “challenge the very structures of the patriarchy”. It splits thinking of what feminism means into right and wrong based on what’s popular. It also discusses backlash and misogynistic movements meant to counter the rise of feminism. Feminism is there to empower women, but doesn’t really focus on social issues as much as it should due to its’ popularity.
I’ve noticed how popular feminism was becoming as I was in high school and college, but I never really considered its’ popularity as impacting the movement itself. However as the feminism movement became stronger, so did those opposing it-and the internet (primarily social media) makes it very easy to fight ideas behind a screen. Not only fight ideas, but the anonymity creates a place where its’ easy to threaten someone with violence for their opinions (on any side of an argument).
