What is radio?
The definition of radio is argued among scholars because of the radio’s adaptability over time. It began as just sound waves, but was enhanced with more modern technology that led it to be still popular today. The older ideas of how to define radio became complicated as new technologies were involved (social media, television, and podcasts).
What differentiates podcasting from radio?
Podcasting can be considered by some as an “extension of radio”. However, the mode of broadcasting is much different. Since podcasts are centered around specific subjects, they have specific audiences and aren’t meant to cater to everyone (as radio is), so the podcasts can have more freedom with what they say. The broadcast of a podcast depends on the medium it is being broadcast on, while radio has one specific place it airs from. Podcasting is not meant to replace radio, but to work alongside it on different public sites. While there are advertisements on podcasts, there are usually not “commercial breaks” as there are on a lot of radio.
